Special Board Meeting Tuesday, Aug. 2 at 4pm-Personnel Matters

HCSBoard Seal

There will be a Special Huntsville City Schools Board Meeting tomorrow afternoon (August 2, 2011) at 4:00pm at 200 White Street. The stated purpose on the agenda is to discuss “Personnel Matters.”

While the agenda doesn’t offer any additional detail about the meeting, The Huntsville Times stated Saturday that the meeting would likely be to discuss the hiring of a new Chief Financial Officer to replace Herbert Wheeler who is on administrative leave pending a potential dismissal.

(I say, “potential” because the school system hasn’t been successful of late at dismissing personnel. Excluding, of course, special education personnel.)

The board could also hear recommendations from Dr. Wardynski for the elementary and secondary directors positions vacated by Alicia Wilson and Judy Shipman.

So, what will the board not deal with tomorrow at 4:00pm? Any of the still outstanding teaching and instructional assistant positions. It’s highly improbable that the board will be able to approve those hires before the postings even close. As they are not having another board meeting until Thursday night, this means that these teachers will have three days (counting the weekend) to prepare for the first day of school on Monday.

Three Days.

Teachers and aides are secondary to the important central office positions.

I hope I’m wrong, but it seems that the system still isn’t putting students first. Since this is a “special” meeting, I doubt that the board will allow public comments.

I suspect that the meeting will be broadcast on ETV (Comcast 17, Knology 99-it’s recently moved from 71), and at the Huntsville City Schools website. I will also be live-tweeting the meeting @russwinn. You can follow on Twitter or on the Geek Palaver Facebook Page.

There will also be a normal board meeting on Thursday, August 4, 2011 at 5:30pm. I’ll post more about that meeting as details become available.
